Beyond the Lens

Artists: Kim Weston, Qiana Mestrich, Mistina Hanscom, Hernease Davis & Daniel Ramos

Applications Open for Fall / Winter Enrollment

Fall 2023 | Winter 2024
Photo Concentration:
Developing Skills and Ideas

Registration for the Fall 2023 & Winter 2024 Workshops will open August 1, 2023. A percentage of each student’s tuition will go to the scholarship fund for young photography scholars.

In both Fall & Winter eight-week workshops, students will meet twice weekly (16 classes in total) and get the opportunity to improve their creative and technical skills in digital photography. Through lectures, assignments and critical feedback from guest artists, students will explore the practical functions of the DSLR camera and learn how to compose a strong and meaningful photograph. One-hour lectures during the week will focus on historical and contemporary African (diaspora), Latinx, Asian and Indigenous artists working across several genres in photography.

During the 3-hour weekend sessions, students will gain knowledge of their camera’s aperture, shutter speed and host of functions. This workshop will also cover basic and advanced shooting techniques, composition, framing, digital workflow, archiving, digital editing (Photoshop), and more. The goal is for each student to develop or complete a small body of work by the end of the workshop. Students must have their own digital camera and license or subscription for Photoshop or any other photo editing software. Please bring 5 images you’ve taken to the first class. Be willing to push yourself to the next level to learn how to get what you see!
