<image:title>Artist Interviews - Allison Minto - Conversation with Allison Minto</image:title>
<image:caption>Why do you use photography as a medium to express your visual message? I'm a visual learner. This particular visual language engages and excites me better than any other medium. You know --- I hate rewatching the same movie but I can somehow always linger and return to the same photograph any time. What is your first memory of how photography changed your way of seeing? I would say my family album. It played a huge role in how I understood myself and the people in the photograph. It was the only visual place where I could find people who looked like me. It is because of the family album that I respond to history, representation, and community in a photographic way. I believe the archive is a testimony to how we exist and it leaves me reimagining past, present and future Black narratives. Why is place so significant in your work? I consider it field research. It's essential to my practice. It influences where I photograph or encourages me to reimagine a new space. Landscapes with historical significance evoke different emotions. When I'm out in the land, I always find myself waiting for it to lead me in a direction -- waiting, listening and observing all that's around me. Sometimes that can mean not taking the photograph at all while also informing the next photo I take. The sensorial experience at a location is part of the process. The style of my work is determined by the relationship I have with my body to the land, objects, and archives at the moment I encounter it. Memory in the mind can be fragmented. How do you continue that conversation when looking at archival images? Imagination is key when I approach archival material. There's going to be missing information. My method begins with a journey of speculation about my family history. I'm paying attention to what's left and how I respond to what's in front of me. I delve into the details of the objects, domestic interior spaces and images, extracting elements that serve as sources of inspiration for the work. It could be anything from the lining fold in a photograph, to how light falls on my grandmother’s couch, or revisiting the place where the photograph was taken. Imagination --- you gotta have it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Allison Minto - Allison Minto Photographer</image:title>
<image:caption>The ideas in my images illuminate a historical consciousness that transcends between personal, past, present and future narratives. My work uses field research and photography to take on themes around African American archives, family, history, memory, preservation and maintenance. My method begins with a journey of speculation about my family history. I'm paying attention to what's left and how I respond to what's in front of me. I delve into the details of the objects, domestic interior spaces and images, extracting elements that serve as sources of inspiration for the work. My decision to use archival elements come out of a personal experience. Not just by digging through my family archives, but by also recognizing the traditional position many Black women in America have played as carriers of generational narratives. The archive is a cultural testimony to how we exist. I ask myself; What happens to a community when traditional historical records render them invisible? How does violence operate inside the matrix of care? What does it mean to be resurrected in an image and the whitewashing of it? The archive is complicated. History is complicated. Truth and fact are not one of the same. And therefore, my work reflects this, my interests in filling in these gaps and how I fit within these spaces. Link to artist statement</image:caption>

<image:title>Qiana Mestrich - Qiana Mestrich</image:title>
<image:caption>Qiana Mestrich is a photography-focused, interdisciplinary artist based in New York. A first-generation American born to parents from Panama and Croatia, Mestrich's work often references Black, mixed-race and transcultural experiences. She has been exhibited worldwide including the 2021 international Triennial RAY Fotografieprojekte Frankfurt/RheinMain, the BRIC Biennial: Volumen III in 2019 and London Art Fair’s Photo50 in 2018. Mestrich’s work is held in the Peggy Cooper Cafritz collection of contemporary art and other private collections in the United States. Knowledge sharing and community building is a vital part of Mestrich’s practice. In 2007 she founded Dodge & Burn: Decolonizing Photography History, an arts initiative that aims to diversify the medium’s history by advocating for photographers of color. Dodge & Burn began as a blog and now functions as a monthly critique group that meets in person in New York City and virtually. Her forthcoming book based on the blog’s past interviews is to be published in 2022 by Routledge/Taylor & Francis. Mestrich has written essays on photography for exhibition catalogs and published critical writing in art journals such as Light Work’s Contact Sheet and En Foco’s Nueva Luz. She is also co-editor of the book How We Do Both: Art and Motherhood (Secretary Press), a diverse collection of honest responses from contemporary artists who dare to engage in the creative endeavors of motherhood and making art. <image:title>Dennis RedMoon Darkeem - Dennis RedMoon Darkeem Mixed Media</image:title>
<image:caption>Dennis RedMoon Darkeem is inspired to create artwork based on the familiar objects he views through his daily travels. He discovers elements in existing architecture and among everyday items found within the home. Darkeem ultimately set out to express a meaningful story about events in his life and the lives of people in the communities where he works. Darkeem utilizes multiple mediums in his work. This creates a rich viewer experience as the eye uncovers the multiple layers. Since starting his work as a professional artist in the early 2000s, it has evolved into critiquing social and political issues affecting the US and indigenous Native American culture. Much of Darkeem’s art has focused on issues like institutionalized racism and classism, jarring stereotypes, and the displacement of people of color. As an interdisciplinary artist, Darkeem expresses these motifs through fine art, drawings, paintings, collages, photography, sculpture, and installations. He incorporates a craftwork aesthetic in many of his pieces to connect tradition with the contemporary. He seeks to create discussions through color, texture, symbolism, and geometric designs. His work evokes a historical memory and questions the status quo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kwadwo Adae - Kwadwo Adae Painter</image:title>
<image:caption>Kwadwo Adae is a New Haven based, Ghanian-American visual artist and muralist. After earning his Masters Degree in painting from New York University in 2005, he founded the Adae Fine Art Academy; an independent art school specializing in the individualized instruction of drawing and painting in all levels and media to children, teenagers, and adults. In his fervent explorations in the medium of oil paint Adae experiments through multiple genres of visual language; from figurative and floral works created from live observation, to purely non-objective works of art that push the boundaries of painting and sculpture in thickly textured artworks that echo the high vibrancy of cultural aesthetics from the Ashanti tribe of Ghana. Adae is strongly committed to contributing to the discourse of public art that amplifies the voices of the underserved by focusing his investments and public artistic endeavors in local communities that were subjected to discriminatory redlining policies. His domestic public art work speaks directly to themes of social justice, racial equality, women’s rights, gun violence, police brutality, and environmental awareness. Adae has also orchestrated three international mural projects with children in India, Guatemala, and Ecuador creating collaborative murals which amplify the culture of the indigenous voices subjugated by European colonial powers. Adae is a guided meditation practitioner at One Village Healing, a wellness space in New Haven primarily for BIPOC who seek healing and wellness from systemic white supremacist oppressive spaces. <image:title>Our Founder</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Founder Kim Weston is a photographer, galleriest, and arts advocate whose work centers on accessibility, representation, and mentorship in the arts. A graduate of The Cooper Union (BFA) and Bard College/International Center of Photography (MFA), Weston has dedicated her career to making fine art and photography available to people of all ages and backgrounds. In Fall 2021, she founded Wábi Arts—a new gallery and teaching space in downtown New Haven. Wábi features work by Connecticut-based and emerging national artists, with a strong focus on community engagement. Central to the space is the FOCUS Fellowship, a teen photography mentorship program inspired by Weston’s own beginnings at Jamaica Arts Center in Queens. “It saved my life,” she says. “Now it’s my turn to give back. Through Wábi, Weston fosters a space where creativity is a tool for healing, discovery, and empowerment. Her mission is not only to showcase compelling work—but to cultivate the next generation of artists who reflect and reimagine the communities they come from.</image:caption>

<image:title>Zun Lee - Zun Lee Photographer</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Zun Lee is an award-winning visual storyteller, physician and educator who divides his time between Toronto, Canada and Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born and raised in Germany and has also lived in Atlanta, Philadelphia and Chicago. His work investigates quotidian life in Black domestic spaces - both as the locus of intimacy and belonging and as the site of erasure and displacement. Originally trained as a neuroscientist and after nearly two decades in management consulting, the 2020 Guggenheim Fellow initially focused his visual arts endeavors on street photography and long-form visual storytelling. Lee is best known for his immersive photo-ethnographic projects of Black family life that often subvert mainstream representations of Blackness and Black bodies. In his work, ephemeral moments of everyday life codify shared meaning around Black identity and belonging, but he is also interested in how shared meaning is complicated and disrupted as images of Black sociality circulate outside of their original context of production. Lee has since expanded into archival and orphan works, social practice and place keeping, creative writing. Constantly looking for ways to create collaboratively beyond photography, Lee examines the complex role of digital technologies and virtual/social media as tools that mitigate (but also perpetuate) power imbalances in the representation of marginalized communities. Through an intersectional and interdisciplinary lens, Lee foregrounds issues of visual literacy and structural competency, as well as ethics and consent in an increasingly crowdsourced, virtualized and surveilled society. Lee has exhibited, spoken and taught at numerous institutions in North America and Europe. His works are widely published and represented in public and private collections around the world. Selected honors and awards include: Guggenheim Fellow (2020), Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Practitioner in Residence (2019), Knight Foundation Grantee (2018), Magnum Foundation Fellow (2015), Photo District News Photo Annual Winner (2015), Paris Photo/Aperture Photobook Awards Shortlist (2014), Photo District News’ 30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch (2014).
Lee has since expanded into archival and orphan works, social practice and placekeeping, creative writing. <image:title>Kim Weston - Kim Weston Photographer</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve spent the last several years questioning what the naked-eye sees and doesn’t see. The camera sees and captures what we don’t humanly have the capabilities to see in splits of seconds. My Camera was given to me by my mother and has been my access to freedom from a very early age. Most of these photographs where shot at Native American powwows or ceremonies. I sit on the ground while shooting so I can feel the drum in my body. It’s the heart beat that guides me to press the shutter on my camera. I’m in direct connection and in sync with everything around me. The music and dancers movements have an emotional affect on my spirit that I can’t explain with words. So I use my camera to capture the connections I’ve created with my people, my ancestors and my family. I don’t expect people to feel what I feel but these photographs are a direct result of ancestral and human energies being one in a moving moment frozen in time that constantly moves onwards. <image:title>Daniel Ramos - Daniel Ramos Photographer</image:title>
<image:caption>Early on in my career, I made images of my family members, neighbors, and coworkers: first generation immigrants and the working class. I used photography to magnify their presence in the world. I have recently begun moving beyond the single image approach of picture making to create 3-dimensional sculptures, large-scale photomontages, and mixed media installations. I works with my own photographs, family heirlooms, memorabilia, and archives and places them directly on or among discarded wood, ceramic tile, and other construction materials to express my personal life experience. By revealing my own personal history, I aim to remind my viewer that the natural world is free from politics, and if we preserve our own legacy, we have control of our history. w | www.danielramosphoto.com IG: @danielramosphoto Artpace Exhibition via Matterport</image:caption>

<image:title>Susan McCaslin - Susan McCaslin Sculptor and Photographer</image:title>
<image:caption>Susan McCaslin’s sculptural works are odes to home and security. Using various mixed media (paper mache, sumi ink and newspaper among others), she creates her own landscapes of houses and walls, vessels and boulders. As a photographer, McCaslin does not go out looking for subjects, she often just stops by the side of the road or interrupts her daily walks to capture the texture and position of a tree, the light of a scene, or the architecture of a composition. Having been raised in the midst of dairy farms in Pennsylvania, she is comfortable with landscape alongside her passion for the messy detritus of long-closed closets and forgotten attic and cellar boxes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Faustin Adeniran - Faustin Adeniran Sculptor</image:title>
<image:caption>Part mosaic, part assemblage, Adeniran’s works feature fields of dazzling color crafted from an array of media to mourn the loss of traditional African cultural practices and natural resources. The exchange of long-established African social structures for the gradual adaptation of Western ideas and influences are what Adeniran describes as ‘transcendent assimilation.’ Ultimately, Adeniran’s work is about hope and beauty, his love and appreciation for humanity and environmental justice, and the collective loss that occurs when those cultural values are discarded. We would do well to consider his adage, “If you want to learn about a society, look at what it throws away.” Adeniran has spent the last seven years in New Haven, Connecticut, creating three-dimensional works that defy categorization. Detritus is Adeniran’s medium, and his works discuss elements of Nigeria’s historical and present-day challenges often overlooked or discarded because they are inconvenient and somewhat uncomfortable. Adeniran is from the Yoruba tribe, one of the three main indigenous groups in Nigeria. Embedded in his works are references to Yoruba and broader Nigerian culture, racial and tribal conflict, and the complicated history of African colonialism. Faustin is a certified Contemporary Artist for the African Artist Foundation and a Member of the Centre of Contemporary Art, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria. Faustin’s works have been featured in international exhibitions in Nigeria and France as well as exhibitions across the Northeast USA, including the Empire State Building, NY; Highline Loft Gallery in Chelsea, NY; Ely Center for Contemporary Arts in New Haven, CT, Mehari Gallery in Washington DC and Pulse Artfair in Miami FL. His work has been featured at artnet news, and most recently, Adeniran was featured in the Washington Post. Faustin studied at the University of Lagos and continues to pursue his passion and expand his body of work at the Adeniran Art Studio based in New Haven, CT, USA.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am a proud citizen of the Lenape Tribe of New Jersey and the Nanticoke Tribe of Delaware, and currently reside on the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indian Reservation in Oregon. As a contemporary mixed-media Indigenous artist I explore a wide range of styles and mediums, from traditional native crafts to fine art painting. I draw inspiration from my ancestors to infuse a modern twist into traditional arts. My work often utilizes older images to craft new narratives, offering fresh perspectives on history. I embrace each new style as a means of self-expression and my fearless approach to art allows me to continually push boundaries and discover where my creative mind will lead me next.</image:caption>

<image:title>Aisha Nailah - Aisha Nailah Painter</image:title>
<image:caption>Aisha Nailah (Eye-ee-shuh, N’eye-ee-luh) means “life, the one who succeeds'' in Swahili, she says of her name “my parents named me well”. Born and raised in Bridgeport, Ct, Aisha is a teaching artist, her focus is abstract and abstract figurative multimedia art, recently adding murals and public art works to her list of skills. Like most children she started showing her interests and talents in art early then life happens..In college she was particularly interested in collage, painting and photography, but didn’t really pursue art seriously until she was finishing her bachelors degree in Art Therapy at Albertus Magnus. She then decided to take a chance and exhibit in 2010. Even then she went on to become a special education teacher, working in special education for 10 years and pursuing art outside of that. Throughout that time she has continued to exhibit and curate including the Beautiful Crime exhibits & Obsidian Colored Glasses at Read’s Artspace and co-curated at BLENDS Gallery in Bridgeport from 2017-2019. In 2021 she decided to leave teaching special education full time to focus more on her art. Regarding her art: “I feel in some ways my work is a spiritual practice, I do what I’m led to do versus planning it out. I LOVE color, I love texture and pattern but more importantly culture informs my pieces. The culture of growing up in a Costa Rican household, being a Black girl in an inner city, being “Afrocentric” and having been immersed in African culture through many activities, being a mother, a Black mother, sister, daughter, etc., practicing ancestor worship. All of this finds its way into my work.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Greg Aimé - Greg Aimé Painter</image:title>
<image:caption>Greg Aimé is a Connecticut based Haitian-American multi-disciplined artist. He evokes wonder through his stunning portrayal of the Black form through his illustrative storytelling capabilities via digital collages. Coming from a large family mostly comprised of women, black women are the focal point and recurring theme of his work. His current focus is exploring the complex relationship of the descendants of the diaspora within society, history, spirituality, religion, royalty, and sovereignty. His work aims to bridge the past and the present, as well as Eastern and Western cultures, to showcase similarities amongst a diverse race of people. ‘‘My work is a documentation of black history past, future, and present. Each portrait is a manifestation of spirituality, culture, and beliefs. I see and create who have been forgotten and who we should never forget. At the root my work is a journey of self discovery and healing where I immortalize and honor the ancestors in the process. Through collages my aim is to spark conversation throughout the diaspora and ultimately further unite the collective.’’</image:caption>

<image:title>Liz Celotto - Liz Celotto Photographer</image:title>
<image:caption>Liz Celotto, long interested in alternative photographic processes, combines the use of a centuries old device with current digital technology. Using a digital camera to capture images from a camera obscura allows her to produce photos with a unique effect. She has often viewed photography as a tool for artistic expression, going beyond its inherent capability of capturing a particular moment in time. To her, photography is another tool, like painting, collage and sculpture, that enables her to order her vision of balance, color, texture and emotion. Celotto has an undergraduate degree from Skidmore College and a MFA in Photography from Brooklyn College. She has been a production manager in photography and video studios and is currently a video editor.</image:caption>
